Make it Write
Son of Yuppies
By Fayette Fox
The parents of the upper upper middle class
Baby
Made the erroneous decision
To abandon their only child
Temporarily
While they went to market
To fetch some nonfat milk and laptop computers
Gypsies, being out of fashion
And far from politically correct
Did not come to take the
Baby away
Instead it was a pocket sized rubber whale
The synthetic humpback
Gently lifted the child
Into the creek
Nudging the stroller downstream with her nose
Amused by the water
The son of yuppies
Drooled excitedly
Once they reached the Pacific heading North
The baby was pacified
As he sucked warm whale milk
From his guardian's teat
Safe in Alaska
The child teethed on kelp stalks
Swam with sea otters
He learned to filter feed on krill
And finger-paint whale songs
On the backs of polar bears
With squid juice
Three cycles of a salmon later
A tired man stood on the starboard
Side of a cruise ship
Negotiating on his phone
He paused
Almost smelling the sound
Of his stolen son's toes
Splishing in water
He continued his transaction
And put the phone away |
